Challenges

Their love of argument and debate can often wear people out.
They struggle to stay consistent and disciplined in their external communication.
They often struggle to follow through on the ideas and innovations they develop.
They struggle to discipline their talents, it’s all too easy for them to trade on charisma and avoid the hard work.

Suggested Growth Opportunities

Self-awareness! Understand how much you dominate conversations and how little you truly listen to others. Discipline and discretion!
Developing healthy rhythms of exercise, work, sleep and recreation, it’s easy to get stuck in multi tasking!
Learning how to be emotionally present with people and take a genuine interest in the lives of others.
Practically serving those who live on the margins of society, the poor, those who struggle to get by.

What happens under moderate stress?

You become more reactionary and find it hard to switch off from work.
You are constantly searching for solutions to get you out of the hole you are in.
You are physically present and increasingly appear to be emotionally absent.
You become impatient and want to try something new, burning your people and resources.

What happens under extreme stress?

Start to withdraw away from the external world of creativity and ideas.
You order your physical world—put files back into their folders, clean your desk.
Physically exhausted you use sleep to dull the pain of your latest idea having failed.
Seek to lose yourself in sensory escapism, overeating, exercising, drinking.

What does a healthy Pioneer/Connector look like?

A love of exploring the future and dreaming with others as to what could be.
The ability to provide ingenious, innovative problem solving; they love strategy and helping people become the best they can be.
The ability to become a very compelling communicator who is able to combine humor, charisma and logic to sell their vision of the future.
A love of solving complex organizational challenges - functioning at the interface of people, systems and resources.

How do they stay healthy?

They need to schedule time to get out of the day to day and have time to brainstorm the future with people whose competency they value.
They need to monitor how much time they are spending in the minutia and organizational details and not getting lost in the weeds.
They need to travel as often as possible, experience different cultures and working environments. As they teach their new ideas they refine and improve them.
They need to avoid setting themselves and others impossible deadlines, learning how to switch off.

What causes the Pioneer/Connector to become unhealthy?

When they spend too much time dealing with the micro details of the organization and don't have the opportunity to shape the future.
When they get overwhelmed by people and meeting their ongoing practical needs.
When they don’t have anyone competent enough to process the ideas with.
When they start to fear failure and are tempted to use their persuasive skills to manipulate people to their own advantage.
